Tin Roof Rain Fall 2.0 <Tainan>
500×500×366cm 2026 Mizuiro workshop, Tainan, Taiwan
This exhibition is centered on my artistic practice and my lived experience between Malaysia and Tainan. The overall presentation is divided into two parts: a spatial installation and a series of furniture works.
The main installation, Tin Roof Rain 2.0, is developed from my earlier work, Tin Roof Rain Fall 1.0. It extends from my observations of Tainan’s urban environment and daily life, forming a Tainan-specific version of “tin roof rain fall.” In this work, I approach the architectural features and living environment of Tainan from the perspective of a laborer, rather than that of an architect.
The structure of the installation employs commonly used Taiwanese construction materials—“1.8-inch and 1.2-inch laminated wooden battens”—as its supporting framework. Four vertical columns are constructed to form a spatial configuration reminiscent of the courtyard of a traditional Tainan temple. Grey water pipes run through the columns, continuously dripping water onto corrugated metal sheets above, simulating both the sound and visual effect of rainfall. The sound produced by raindrops striking the metal surface shapes an auditory landscape that recalls my past memories and experiences of living in a Malaysia Chinese New Village.
At the center of the installation, a well-like drainage system is designed. The surface of the well is constructed using curved panels and plaster, with its form derived from structural elements I observed on the rooftops of old temples in Tainan. I noticed that Minnan tile roofing shares a certain formal and functional similarity with weatherboards: both are composed through layered construction, allowing viewers to intuitively imagine the process of making and assembling from their visible structure.
At the front and rear of the installation, two smaller works are presented—the furniture pieces Weather Board Wall Lamp and Minnan Tile Stool. Using furniture as a medium, I incorporate formal elements of Minnan tiles and louvers into the design, allowing the three works to collectively form a space that resembles a scene from everyday life.
As viewers gradually immerse themselves in the atmosphere I have constructed, the installation suddenly emits a loud mechanical banging sound against the metal sheets after approximately twenty minutes, disrupting the initial calm and pulling the audience back into reality. This abrupt noise responds to the sound of fighter jets that frequently pass overhead in the daily life of Tainan residents, transforming a local lived experience into a sonic event within the work.
